Vertebrate Publishing announces special edition hardback of forthcoming nature and conservation book Kinder Scout
- Tuesday 30 January 2018
Mountain-literature specialist Vertebrate Publishing will this March publish Kinder Scout: The people’s mountain – a unique collaboration between award-winning author Ed Douglas and British nature and travel photographer John Beatty.
Nestled at the base of the Pennines in the Peak District National Park, Kinder Scout – Britain’s most popular mountain – is marked by a rich social and political history that has shaped its landscape; and, in 1932, bore witness to the Kinder Mass Trespass, which influenced modern countryside access legislation.
Robert Macfarlane, author of The Lost Words and Mountains of the Mind, describes Kinder Scout as, 'an exceptional book … The writing is rich with original research, the photographs glitter with strangeness and beauty, and the whole book rings with the passion, knowledge and vision of two people who have explored their subject for most of their lives, and fallen into profound acquaintance with it.’
Ed Douglas is a highly regarded author of eleven books about mountains and their people, including the Boardman-Tasker-prize-winning Rock Athlete, the memoirs of pioneering rock climber Ron Fawcett, and his most recent work, a collection of eight essays titled The Magician’s Glass.
John Beatty’s vast portfolio of extraordinary landscape and nature photography is recognised around the world and appears frequently in British and international media. He publishes the annual Wild Nature Diary for the John Muir Trust, the leading wild land conservation charity in the UK, and his books include Wild Vision, The Pure Land: A Celebration of Wild Places and Sula: Seabird Hunters of Lewis.
Kinder Scout will be published on 22 March in paperback.
