Three Vertebrate Publishing Titles Shortlisted for the 2018 Boardman Tasker Award
- Wednesday 29th August 2018
Vertebrate Publishing titles make up three of the seven books on this year’s shortlist for the prestigious Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature.
The Boardman Tasker Charitable Trust was established in 1983 to commemorate the lives of Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker – acclaimed British mountaineers and authors who lost their lives on the North-East Ridge of Mount Everest in 1982. The annual prize promotes literature by awarding £3,000 to authors of an outstanding work concerned with the mountain environment.
Tides is an emotive and fast-paced memoir, a window into the nature of extreme climbing over the last thirty years; The Ogre is a biography of the Karakoram mountain and the dramatic story of Doug Scott and Chris Bonington's first ascent and epic descent, and Kinder Scout is a book about how man has shaped and been shaped by wild places as told through the story of a mountain in the Derbyshire Peak.
This is the ninth time Vertebrate books have been selected for the shortlist, with four titles having previously won the prize: Ron Fawcett’s Rock Athlete in 2010, Andy Kirkpatrick’s Cold Wars in 2012, The Bond by Simon McCartney in 2016, and in 2017, Art of Freedom by Bernadette McDonald.
The four titles that complete the shortlist are The Eight Mountains by Paolo Cognetti, The Flying Mountain by Christoph Ransmayr, Limits of the Known by David Roberts and Honouring High Places by Junko Tabei and Helen Y. Rolfe.
The winner will be announced at the Boardman Tasker Award presentation on Friday 16 November 2017 at the Kendal Mountain Festival.
