Simon Yates to return to Sheffield this weekend to launch new book at ShAFF
- Tuesday 6th March 2012
A University of Sheffield graduate and a Sheffield resident for over 12 years in the 1980s and 1990s, Simon came to prominence in 1985 after making the first ascent of the West Face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes with Joe Simpson – the ensuing epic descent of which is described in Simpson’s book Touching the Void.
Simon has since gone on to become one of the UK's most accomplished mountaineers, with a career in the mountains spanning 30 years in which he has made first ascents of Peaks all around the world with climbers including Andy Cave and Doug Scott.
Simon is also an accomplished writer and The Wild Within covers his adventures over the last 10 years as he travels to some of the world's most remote mountain ranges and observes as modern communications become increasingly common. He also writes candidly about becoming a father and balancing his extreme career in the mountains with his parental responsibilities at home, and he shares his experience of starring in the film adaptation of Touching the Void.
Simon commented: 'Living in Sheffield certainly helped me to become the climber I am now and enabled me to develop my climbing into a successful career in the mountains. The city's role in the UK climbing community can't be overstated and I always enjoy coming back here and catching up with old friends.'
The Wild Within is published this week by Sheffield publisher Vertebrate Publishing. It is available direct and from all good book shops.
