Vertebrate Publishing is a leading publisher of outdoor adventure books and guidebooks with a growing international reputation for quality. We specialise in books about climbing, mountaineering, mountain biking, hillwalking, cycling, caving, running and photography. We also publish young adult (YA) fiction titles. 

About the role

The marketing manager is primarily responsible for planning and implementing a marketing plan for the business. This will include promotion of select key titles, managing social media, generating PR, author support, writing enewsletters and developing and managing relationships with key industry/media contacts.

To help our business continue to grow, we are looking for a dynamic and highly organised individual with a proven track record in marketing and PR who can balance a wide variety of tasks and manage their time effectively while securing high-profile publicity for our titles.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead on the development and implementation of Vertebrate’s marketing strategy.
  • Nurture positive relationships with existing media and industry contacts, as well as identifying new opportunities to establish beneficial relationships.
  • Ensure consistency of branding across all public-facing communications, ensuring that these reflect Vertebrate’s ethos and personality.
  • Utilise all available social media and third-party websites such as Amazon and Goodreads to promote our titles.
  • Stay abreast of developments within the digital sphere to ensure that Vertebrate and its products receive the most effective exposure.
  • Maintain internal systems to ensure that promotional material,such as our website and databases are kept up-to-date.
  • Support and work closely with the marketing executive on tasks such as organising events and the creation of promotional literature.
  • Analyse website, social media and enewsletter performance and feedback to colleagues in a monthly report.
  • Keep key distributors up to date via a monthly summary of priorities, upcoming/latest publicity and recent performance.
  • Provide support with editorial tasks – such as proofreading – when needed.

About you

You will have:

  • Experience of implementing creative and effective marketing campaigns, preferably in the publishing sector.
  • Excellent communication skills, and the ability to communicate with senior managers and established authors.
  • Exceptional time management, organisation and prioritisation skills.
  • A high level of attention to detail.
  • A solid understanding of the importance of brand identity and knowledge of how to embed this across all communication channels.
  • Excellent computing skills, including standard Windows software, and the ability to pick up new systems quickly.
  • Some knowledge of the outdoor pursuits market and/or the publishing market.
  • Experience of using social media within a professional context.
  • Experience of supporting junior members of staff.

The salary offered will be competitive, depending on your skills and experience. This role is full-time, based in our Sheffield office.
