Vertebrate Publishing is an award-winning independent publisher and the UK’s leading publisher of outdoor adventure books and guides. We publish books to inspire adventure, and it’s our rule that we only publish books that we want to read or use ourselves.

As we embark on a programme of expansion in 2019, we have an opportunity for an articulate, hard-working creative artworker to join our team. The successful candidate will have a fastidious attention to detail, a wonderfully creative mind, great typographic skills, a love of learning and a determination to produce beautiful work that inspires, entertains and informs.

This is a full-time position based in our offices in Sheffield (that’s up north). Reporting to the head of design and collaborating closely with editorial and marketing, the creative artworker will:

  • layout market-leading non-fiction books and children’s fiction books, many but not all on established templates
  • be responsible for marketing design output (for print, web and social media)
  • work with editorial to keep all projects on schedule.

We are looking for an applicant with demonstrable design experience who is motivated to develop their career and help us grow our business. We are specifically looking for someone who has:

  • a design degree or equivalent qualification
  • a minimum of two years’ experience in a graphic design environment – book design experience is desirable, but not essential
  • in-depth knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, in particular InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • an excellent eye for typography
  • the ability to work in a team, multitask, manage details, work using their own initiative and meet deadlines
  • a positive, friendly and professional attitude.

Driven, results-focused individuals will find this job very rewarding. An interest in the areas in which we publish is desirable, but not essential.

Salary: circa £22,000.

To apply, please send your portfolio link/PDF (under 10MB), your CV and a short paragraph to introduce yourself to

Closing date for applications: 9 a.m., Monday 10 June 2019.
