About Vertebrate Publishing
Vertebrate Publishing is an award-winning independent publisher based in Sheffield. The company currently employs fourteen staff, with many opportunities for growth in the outdoor adventure market. Vertebrate aspire to be the leading outdoor adventure publisher in the UK within the next five years.
Although a relatively small business, Vertebrate Publishing is very complicated and it is vital that the management team has accurate and timely data. We have 300 different titles and most have a unique financial profile, where the cost of sale is varied dependent on the sales channel. Routes to market are equally complicated with a mixture of direct sales from the website, and those that pass through distributors and wholesalers before being sold online, in bookshops or outdoor shops.
Identifying new books that will sell profitably across UK and increasingly European markets involves considerable research and modelling and an ability to mine data to support commissioning, production and marketing. Launching a new title is a considerable investment in both time and financial resources and each of the fifty or so books we plan to publish each year is effectively a mini investment decision with initial cash outlays producing returns over many years.
We seek to combine the financial projections from all of our current portfolio and planned new books into one large model which incorporates the overheads of the business.
By placing accurate data at the heart of the business we will give ourselves the best chance of achieving our business objectives of becoming the UK’s leading publisher in our chosen markets of climbing, off-road cycling, hillwalking, running and wild swimming.
