Cold Wars and The Wild Within shortlisted for the 2012 Boardman Tasker Prize
- Tuesday 4th September 2012
We are delighted to announce that two of our titles have been shortlisted for the 2012 Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature. Andy Kirkpatrick's book Cold Wars and Simon Yates's book The Wild Within have been chosen as part of a six title shortlist for this year's prize.
Established in 1983, this prestigious international prize is presented by the Boardman Tasker Charitable Trust, which promotes literature by providing an award to authors of literary works, the central theme of which is concerned with mountains.
The Boardman Tasker Prize commemorates the lives of Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker – outstanding mountaineers and accomplished authors – who disappeared together high on Everest in 1982. It is given to the author or co-authors of an original work which has made an outstanding contribution to mountain literature.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Peter and Joe's disappearance, and, as has become tradition in recent years, the winner will be announced at a special ceremony as part of the Kendal Mountain Festival in November.
The six title shortlist contains a variety of strong titles, including Into The Silence by Wade Davis, about the early Everest expeditions of the 1920's, and Fiva, Gordon Stainforth's gripping account of his and his twin brother's near fatal accident in Norway in 1969.
Vertebrate's Publishing Manager John Coefield commented: 'We're delighted for Andy and Simon that their books have been recognised by the award's judges. It further reinforces our commitment to continue the longstanding British tradition of publishing high quality mountaineering literature.'
Previous high profile local winners include Touching the Void by Joe Simpson in 1988, and Learning to Breathe, former Barnsley miner Andy Cave’s first book in 2005. Vertebrate Publishing is also a previous winner as Rock Athlete, our autobiography of Peak District climber Ron Fawcett, was awarded the Prize in 2010.
