'I was inspired to try mountaineering by reading RLG Irving’s The Romance of Mountaineering. I hope that my book can likewise inspire at least one teenager to find similar joy and beauty in the mountains.'
A personal account of 38 years of walking, climbing, mountaineering and ski-mountaineering in Britain, the Alps and farther afield written by Rupert Hoare. Rupert enjoyed photography since his first mountain on the Isle of Jura and this book is richly illustrated with over 150 colour photographs.
Born in 1956 and educated at Winchester College and Exeter University, Rupert Hoare spent his career in oil exploration, working for Seismograph Service Limited, LASMO and WesternGeco. A former president of the London Mountaineering Club and the Alpine Ski Club, he married Jay Turner in 1996 and they lived in Aberdeenshire.
Rupert was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2011. He began writing this book a month later and it was published just before his untimely death in September 2011.
Rupert regarded his life as one well spent. He enjoyed his work, his friends, his marriage, his family and all the time out in the mountains, especially when able to take good photographs.
'Fortunate indeed is man that he can forget so soon the physical stresses of life and remember only the greater blessings of his strenuous endeavours.'
FS Smythe, In the Valley of Flowers, 1938
