What's new this month? October 2018

Monday, 8 October 2018

In July, we were lucky enough to be joined by Sarah, our newest team member, who has been busy adding to our ebook programme. Over the past few months, she's been concentrating on John Muir's wilderness conservation titles. Here's what she had to say about them: 'Working on the John Muir series was a real pleasure. The passion and poetic detail in each of his books, regarding nature and the great outdoors, is hard to match. Each read will leave you not only inspired, but most likely with a new favourite Muir quote or two!'

This is Sarah's verdict on our newly ebooked Muir tites:

Our National Parks

Our National Parks excellently showcases all that makes Muir Muir: his natural passion for wildness, his drive to conserve and protect it, and his ability to motivate others to feel the same way. Comprising ten essays about national parks such as Yellowstone and Yosemite, the animals that can be found there, and the wild gardens and forests that surround them, this book makes for both a varied and educationally intriguing read.

The Mountains of California

The Mountains of California details Muir’s visits to the magnificent mountains along the famous Sierra Nevada Range, and perfectly captures nature's ability to comfort, challenge and inspire. This book is a must-have for any mountaineering lover; Muir’s writing, embedded with emotion, wit, and at times, humour, will never fail to speak to his reader. As well as detailing mountains, meadows and lakes, Muir describes the animals of the Sierra Nevada with real consideration and passion – making for a heart-warming read.

Travels in Alaska

My favourite of all Muir books – Travels in Alaska – showcases the adventures that were most dear to Muir. Describing his three trips to Alaska and the picturesque landscapes, unique glacier range and various tribes that can be found there, this book is both informative and inspiring. What truly makes Travels in Alaska special is that it gives a real insight into Muir’s bold character, even when facing life threating situations no challenge is too great – making for both a thrilling and rewarding read.

Steep Trails

Steep Trails is a delightful collection of essays, adventure narratives and scientific studies covering mostly the western region of the States, such as The Grand Canyon, the rivers of Oregon and The San Gabriel Mountains of California. Showcasing Muir’s passion continuously as he climbs mountains, bathes in lakes, and sketches his findings, this book will have something for everyone with an interest in our natural world.
