Day Walks on the South Downs is the fifth title in Vertebrate Publishing’s series of compact and portable hill walking guidebooks. This book showcases 20 circular walks, between 6 and 14 miles (9km and 22km) in length, suitable for hill walkers of all abilities.
The routes are split into three geographical areas – Hampshire,West Sussex andEast Sussex – and include walks to the most historic and beautiful areas of the Downs, including Winchester Hill Fort, Black Down, Chanctonbury Ring, Devil’s Dyke, Ditchling Beacon and Beachy Head.
The author of this guidebook, Deirdre Huston, is a South Downs local and keen hill walker. This is Deirdre’s third book with Vertebrate Publishing, following the successful and popular Cycling in Sussex, and the recently released Cycling Days Out South East England.
Each route in this guide is described with easy-to-follow directions and details of distance, navigation information, refreshment stops and is plotted on clear and easy to use Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 mapping. Also included is a detailed Appendix.
About the author
Sussex local Deirdre Huston is an author and photographer whose work is inspired by her love of the outdoors. She is author of Cycling Days Out South East England, and co-author of the popular leisure cycling guidebook Cycling in Sussex, a collection of local routes on quiet lanes and off-road trails. Researching guidebooks gives her the perfect excuse to indulge her love of walking and photography. A qualified teacher and mother of three, Deirdre was born in Sussex. She enjoys exploring favourite and familiar places as much as seeking out new locations which are tucked away, yet to be discovered. Deirdre runs community-based Young Writers Workshops in mid-Sussex and is author of the children’s story Jake, Zee-Bee and the Crystal Quest.
