The best climbing book I’ve ever read.’
Lito Tejada-Flores, High

Ed Drummond is one of the great characters of the British climbing scene. An inspired climber and writer, he made first ascents across the UK and wrote some of the most unusual articles in the mountaineering world. In doing so, he won two Keats prizes, a National Poetry prize and created some classic routes.

A climbing book like no other, A Dream of White Horses mixes climbing tales with an intense personal story. The first ascent of the Long Hope Route on St John's Head and a solo ascent of El Capitan's Nose sit alongside Drummond’s eventful childhood and a string of failed relationships that took him to the edge of despair. Political and social concerns loom as  Drummond scales Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square in an anti-apartheid protest and the Statue of Liberty in support of civil-rights activists. Told through essays, poems and stories, it is at times exciting, frequently surreal and often deeply personal.

First published in 1987, A Dream of White Horses received a mixed reception, reflecting the author’s notoriety as a climber. Disregarded by the more conservative publishing and mountaineering establishments, it received rave reviews in the climbing press. Love it or hate it, the book is an undeniably fascinating read.

The most challenging, disturbing and provocative piece of climbing literature I’ve ever read ... the consistent brilliance is astounding.
Stuart Pregnall, Climbing

Edwin Drummond is a visionary climber and poet, creator of some of the most famous routes in the British Isles.

Born in Wolverhampton in 1945, the eldest son of a builder, Drummond was educated at Bangor and Bristol universities before becoming an English teacher in Sheffield. Trying his hand at various other trades he eventually became a full-time climber, writer and activist. He put up new climbing routes in the UK and on the Troll Wall, won awards for his poetry (two Keats prizes and a National Poetry prize) and used his climbing skills to raise awareness of progressive human rights campaigns, such as the anti-apartheid movement.

Other than his literary output, Drummond’s lasting legacy is his physical poetry – the challenging and classic climbing routes he established across the UK and in the United States. In 2011 he appeared in the award-winning feature film The Long Hope, a documentary following elite climber Dave MacLeod’s attempt to climb Drummond’s route on St John’s head on the Island of Hoy.

Stuart Pregnall, Climbing

'An intoxicating mixture ... Drummond takes risks as big as he did on his climbs and has the courage to use climbing as a metaphor for wider truths.'
Dave Cook Mountain

'There is high art in the simplicity of the style. Amidst so much that is mediocre in mountain literature, Drummond's writing stands out.'
Ernst Sondheimer, The Alpine Journal
